A Hint of Color: To Brighten Any Day

We just photographed one of our favorite rooms (professional shots coming later this week).  Who wouldn't love a room with a hint of pink.  Nothing makes me smile (besides my cute kiddos) like this cute coral tufted ottoman.

This room inspired me to think of the best ways to add hints of color without going overboard and without having to spend a load of money to change out when the shades of color become dated.  In this room, most of the items are neutral except for the bold ottoman, and then hints of color sprinkled throughout the room.  There is pink in the gorgeous fireplace painting, touches in the pillows, and a coral tape on the cream drapery panels.  The room still feels comfortable and livable, but has  personality.  The color keeps the room from feeling overly stuffy.  But the color isn't overdone.  Too much color, especially intense color, can make a room feel casual.

I've come up with 5 of the best ways to add a hint of color to your room.  The key to making it a hint of color and not color saturation is to only use 2-3 of the details in one room.  If you want a lot of color go ahead and add color to more of the areas I cover here, but to not go over board pick your favorites and start there.

These room show the same idea.  Not to be repetitive, but adding a touch of color in an ottoman is a great look that's easily changeable and soft on the eyes.

ACCENT CHAIRS

PILLOWS

Don't ask me why there is so much pink in my favorite room designs!  Accent chairs are another great spot to put a little color.  Notice most of these rooms are neutralized.  Color is only in a few key spots.  Chairs are more expensive to change out, but they are a good place for a little color or pattern to liven up the scheme.

This living room with touches of green is even more neutral in its base.  The color is only introduced in inexpensive (well they probably aren't super cheap but certainly cheaper than the other upholstered pieces!) textiles.  You probably know very well already that pillows are the easiest way to add a hint of color to lift your day.  This room design shows the perfect way to do it simply.

This room not only has the accent pillows, but shows one additional easy way to add color.  Accent tables with a little color are fun and more easily replaceable than an upholstered piece, especially if you sport your DIY skills.

A hint of color at the back of a bookshelf can bring your room to life very simply.  This yellow is a subtle approach to add sunshine into the space.

This room has much more color spread to more details around the room.  The more pieces with brighter color makes the room feels more casual.  This room still isn't over the top, but certainly has more than a hint. All of the details we've talked about adding. the accent chair, ottoman, and pillows are all in this one room.  Plus the roman shades have a hint of color which is one additional way for just a hint of color.  You could pair this down by just using 2 of the details instead of all of them.
