Easy Updates for Home
This week we are having an event at the store (invite only...so this is not one to just pop in on) and the focus is on quick and easy ways to update your home. Since we are putting it together for these fine ladies....we wanted to give you a peak of our best tricks to quickly update your space.
Besides paint, which will come later (as it always makes these types of lists) one super easy update for any room is lighting. New cleaner lined fixtures will add wow factor and take the dated look out of a room fast. Look at any designer portfolio images online and guaranteed if they look new and fresh, the lighting has been updated. Recent trends for lighting include use of lanterns, mixing finishes, adding industrial touches, and golden tones in the fixtures themselves.
When you update your lighting add in updated plumbing fixtures in key spots along with kitchen cabinet hardware to make a greater impression. Here's a few of our favorites.
ADD FINISH DETAIL
In our geographical area, dark rich colors have been the in thing for some time. But moldings, the white ones in the magazines that make you swoon, are making a huge comeback. Fresh design is alive and one easy and great way to get the look is to add finish detail. Add it to ceilings, entries, wainscoting, or simply add some columns or crown. If you prefer richer colors over the fresher look, just paint moldings creamy instead of bright white and you can update but still keep the warmer and darker tones you still love.
While your adding moldings, add a few to your fireplace for a fresh focal point.
Adding a few molding details in this entry helps create more separation and adds crispness to the rooms.
The TV wall focal point is much more interesting with the added finish detail slats.
PAINT OR PAPER
As you update your home, most rooms will get that needed coat of paint, but don't forget wallpaper as it has made a big comeback in the last several years. Keep wallpaper for small rooms such as powder rooms and offices or a laundry/mud room. Warm tans and browns date your home. Freshen up with shades of whites and greys and colors with a blue undertone. Look at the latest trends in color from 2014. Those aren't necessarily colors you'll select for your walls but they will help you get current color into your textiles and accessories. Paint furniture in the more trendy colors that can easily be changed.
Painting cabinetry fits in this category and is a huge way to bring your house current. Shades of grey, blue, and white are popular and classic at the same time.
The walls in this dining room are soft and slightly greyed. The room still feels warm, but is more up to date in the color scheme.
The right colors of paint saved this kitchen from sudden death.
FRESHEN UP WITH FABRIC
Old fashioned patterns are easy to spot. If they are on a sofa, you're in trouble and looking at a big expense to replace. That's why as designers we encourage to go solid on larger pieces. Mix in a few current fabrics for window treatments and up-to date pillows and your have a whole new look that' easy to switch when patterns go out. Can we finally say that Chevron is on it's way OUT!
The soft breezy linen textures in this master bedroom are right on trend. The casual textures and updated pillows keep this room feeling current.
Update an older sofa with a few newer pillows for an inexpensive update.
BULK DOWN SLIM UP
Bulky overstuffed furniture is long gone in the style pages. But guaranteed it's not long gone in most homes. Furniture today is sleeker and cleaner in lines. Think slim and lean and tall not bulky with big arms and chubby feet (furniture can have cankles too!). To update, remove your biggest overstuffed pieces and replace with more slim profiles.
You'll still need to scale your furniture to your room and while the dimensions of the chair may be the same, you'll find that the sleeker arms and backs of these chairs and sofas will not only bring your room in the new decade but give you more room to sit!
