Sanctuary: Essential Wisdom for an Inspired Home

One year ago was the exciting release of our book Sanctuary!  It's fun to know that somewhere in this wide world our book is posed perfectly on someone's coffee table.  Since we seem to have been so busy this last year to hardly make mention of of the book....I thought I'd at least honor our anniversary by highlighting some of my favorite parts over the next few weeks. For those still wanting a copy you can run, walk, or sprint to your nearest Barnes & Noble or get it here at Amazon.  If you want a signed copy, drop by Liv Showroom to buy it and we'd love to autograph it for you!  That always makes us feel very important!

My love of architecture has always drawn me to the topic of today's blog, Structure (one of the four main sections of the book).  While the structure itself is not what makes a home sacred, the important elements of the structure must work cohesively to support our lifestyle.  When writing the book, I had to highlight one important element of the Structure I like to call "Human Scale".   Since many of the homes we design are often super-duper sized we've learned to apply many of our design tricks to bring homes down to a comfortable scale.

One of my favorite projects we've ever done was featured in this Human Scale section of Sanctuary.  What is not to love about this bright and fresh home office?!

Before we added a ceiling treatment and these fabulous floor-to-ceiling built ins, the high ceiling in this unused room felt uncomfortable.  Using a chunky stained table, over-scaled lamps, and a large ceiling fixture were some other solutions to create proper scale for this fun space.

Love where you liv.
